BLUEBERRY MINT JULEP

A few weeks ago the husband and I were sitting at The Jones Assembly and realized it was Kentucky Derby day. It was in that moment, watching mint juleps served by the dozen to big-hatted spectators, that I realized how underappreciated the mint julep is. And naturally, because I had a pint of fresh blueberries, I made a pitcher of blueberry mint juleps as soon as we got home.

Mint juleps are incredibly easy to make and I would venture to say that anyone reading this blog has the necessary ingredients: bourbon, mint, simple syrup and crushed ice. Yes, you really do have to use crushed ice. And, as the name suggests, this recipe calls for blueberries. Leave the berries out and you have a classic southern mint julep.

Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS

3 oz. Bourbon (I'm a through-and-through Bulleit fan, and usually use the Bulleit 95 Rye)

Handful of fresh mint

0.25 cup Blueberries

0.5 oz. Simple syrup

DIRECTIONS

Muddle bluberries, mint and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add bourbon, then shake.

Strain into glass filled with crushed ice. Done!
